This is a chance to end the summer in style, to explore the hidden gems of the island and to celebrate with friends. And it’s true what they say… Ibiza is
always a good idea!
Ibiza Rendezvous History
The Ibiza Rendezvous regatta idea came about from Patrick Whetter, (ex yacht captain) and Howard Gibbons (onshore manager for the Whitbread around the world race and organiser of the ‘Legends of the Whitbread’) in 2012. They felt that there was room in the market for a regatta that went back to the roots of a more relaxed approach that any superyacht could enter and race no matter what level of professionalism. Ibiza’s stunning coastline, little islands and fun atmosphere was the perfect choice and as the famous island had never had a superyacht regatta before the idea was well received by locals and sailing compatriots alike. Unfortunately disaster struck in June 2013 when Patrick was diagnosed with cancer so the event was cancelled at the last minute. Happily Patrick made a full recovery but understandably decided to take a well earned sabbatical and sail around the world with his family to embrace his fresh start in life and Howard chose to bow out without his companion.
Patrick had previously been in business with Spike Thompson for 20 years with the Sail Loft in Alaro and when he asked Spike if he would like to take it over in May 2014 after some deliberation due to the short amount of time left to put the event together, he finally said yes. Spike, an ex yacht captain of 10 years was the founder of the Superyacht Cup in Palma, the first ever superyacht regatta in the world, a consultant director for the America’s Cup and also for Porto Montenegro. He then brought in Amanda Butler who had worked with him in the Superyacht Cup and various other projects as event director alongside Melanie Harcourt and Alex Ferrer from Brown & Blonde marketing to develop and build the brand. The new team launched in June knowing that they had a big task ahead of them but with passion and determination to succeed.
Over the next few months, the branding, website and company structure was researched and developed alongside the marketing of the regatta to boats, owners, shipyards and all relevant connections in the sailing industry. A presentation was done to the Spanish government and after various trips to Ibiza to research marinas a deal was finally done with Marina Ibiza due to their fantastic infrastructure, reputation and 5 Blue Star rating. They also happened to have the best views over the Old Town and the perfect setting next to Calma restaurant at the end of the dock for the regatta village. Media partners were secured – Yachting Matters, Yachting World and The Islander magazine. Meanwhile word had spread, yachts began to sign up and the regatta finally started to take shape again. Once the team felt confident with the number of yachts involved the search for relevant sponsors began and finally the following companies gave their much appreciated backing; Absolute Boat Care, Horizon Marine Electronics, Peters & May, Doyle Sails, Global Services and Deckers alongside the collaborating support of Southern Wind shipyard, Bufete Morell and Brown & Blonde. The regatta had also gained full backing of the Balearic government, Tourist Board, Port D’Eivissa and Club Nautico Ibiza and all that remained now was to give a last minute push for the boats.
The final lines up of yachts were; Maria Cattiva, Havana, Silver Spray, Windfall, Clan VIII and Aloha J.
